Burn Permits
This page contains information about the Ravalli County Burn Permit Program. There is also a link below to renew and activate your burn permit for 2026.
March 1 - November 30: This is the Outdoor open burning season in western Montana, and the permits are administered through the County's Burn Permit Program.
December 1 - End of February: Permits may be issued by the State of Montana's Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). https://deq.mt.gov/air/Programs/burning
You may check daily burning status and activate your day's burn through the state's Burn Permit Program site at: https://app.egovmt.com/burnpermit/, or by calling 866-212-6318. Please refrain from calling the Dispatch Center or Sheriff's Office to inquire about burning status.
Obtaining a burn permit for the first time
(Note, each subsequent year, you will renew, using the same permit #.)
Visit the state’s burn permit site at: https://app.egovmt.com/burnpermit/
Enter name, mailing address, email (required), insurance co., phone #'s, burn location(s), etc..
If the system doesn’t recognize your address, click on the blue "Identifying the latitude and longitude" hyperlink as seen below to select your burn location and follow the "How do I find my latitude/longitude?" instructions exactly. Do not try to type the latitude/longitude in manually.
Note: Left-clicking once on the structure auto-populates the permit application. (Will appear in gray.)
- Select "Add Burn Location" and continue to add other burn locations if needed.
- Select "I'm Done Adding Burn Locations" when finished.
- Verify Contact Info./Burn Locations and select "This Information is Correct."
- Read the Terms and Conditions and select "I Agree."
- Make sure you continue in the process until you have confirmation on the page.
- You will be able to email yourself the permit or save/print.
